VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Spaghetti Mouse drew post position 4 for the $50,000 B.C. Cup Classic, which will headline seven stakes restricted to B.C.-breds at Hastings Monday. The 10-race B.C. Cup Day card will begin at 1:40 p.m.
The 1 1/8-mile feature drew five horses, including its 2009, winner Krazy Koffee, who drew post 3.
Spaghetti Mouse, trained by Lenore (Terry) Dubois was installed as the 6-5 morning line favorite. The all-time leading money winning B.C.-bred with $919,677 in earnings, Spaghetti Mouse won the Classic in 2006 and 2008. He is coming off of a second place finish behind Teide in the $50,000 Lieutenant Governors Handicap July 1.
Spaghetti Mouse can be headstrong, especially with horses pushing him from the outside, and he figures to get a perfect trip from a stalking position behind Surprisal, who will likely be sent to the lead leaving from the rail.
Dave Wilson retains the mount.
Ganbei, at 7-5, looks like the main threat from post 2. Trained by Mel Snow, Ganbei is coming off of a win in the $52,000 S.W. Randall Plate on July 18. In the Randall, Ganbei benefited from a quick pace. There isn’t a lot of speed in the Classic, however, and the potential shape of the race could give Spaghetti Mouse an edge. In his previous start Ganbei finished third in the Lieutenant Governors.
Trick of the North will be looking for his first win since he upset Teide in the Grade 3 Premiers last Oct. 18. Trick of the North, 9-2, will break from the outside post with Pedro Alvarado aboard. Trained by Barbara Heads, Trick of the North made a strong late move to finish second in a $35,000 optional race July 10.
