Oriana Rossi, the leading apprentice at the Ellis Park meet, has been sidelined for three to four weeks after suffering a broken collarbone in a spill Thursday evening in the first race at Hoosier Park in Anderson, Ind. Two other jockeys who fell in the spill, Victor Lebron and Leandro Goncalves, avoided serious injury.
Rossi was injured when Storm In the Lake, ridden by Jamie Theriot, suddenly veered into her path as they led the field in midstretch. Rossi’s mount, My Lucky Fortune, clipped heels and fell, after which the horses ridden by Lebron and Goncalves were unable to avoid the fallen horse, tossing their jockeys. Storm In the Lake finished first but was disqualified for the incident.
Rossi, a 27-year-old native of Italy, had won 19 races, good for third overall, entering the final seven-day stretch of the 27-day meet at Ellis in Henderson, Ky. She had been riding sparingly at Hoosier.
