Point Given relocates to Calumet Farm

Dual classic winner Point Given, who earned Horse of the Year honors in 2001, will relocate to continue his stud career at historic Calumet Farm.

The 15-year-old Thunder Gulch horse, who previously stood at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., will stand for a private fee in 2013 at Calumet. He stood for $20,000 at Three Chimneys in 2012.

Point Given becomes the first North American Grade 1 winner to stand at Calumet in the Brad Kelley era. Kelley, the majority owner of Point Given, assumed control of Calumet last year, leasing it from a trust that purchased the historic facility.

Racing as a homebred for The Thoroughbred Corporation of Prince Ahmed bin Salman, Point Given, who was trained by Bob Baffert, did not finish worse than second in six starts as a juvenile. His season included a victory in the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity and runner-up efforts in both the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Grade 1 Champagne Stakes.

The colt won all but one of his seven starts the following season. Victories in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes and Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby made him the heavy favorite for the Kentucky Derby; however, Point Given finished fifth, the only unplaced effort of his career. The colt rebounded to win the Preakness Stakes two weeks later, followed by a 12 1/4-length romp in the Belmont Stakes.

Point Given concluded his championship season with two additional Grade 1 victories, taking the Haskell Invitational and the Travers Stakes. Forced into retirement by a tendon injury, he finished with nine wins from 13 starts and $3,968,500 in earnings.

Point Given was named 2001 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old colt. He was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2010.

Since entering stud at Three Chimneys in 2002, Point Given has sired 255 winners through Feb. 17, with total progeny earnings of $21,480,243. His 21 stakes winners include two Canadian champions. Sealy Hill earned honors as Horse of the Year, champion 3-year-old filly, and champion turf female in 2007, when she became the first filly to sweep the Triple Tiara. Another daughter, Points of Grace, was named Canada’s champion turf female in 2009.

Point Given is also the sire of Coil, a Grade 1 winner both sprinting and routing; Grade 1 winner Go Between, who captured the 2008 Pacific Classic and earned more than $2.9 million; and Grade 1-winning filly Point Ashley.

Out of the stakes winning Turkoman mare Turko's Turn, Point Given is a half-brother to stakes-placed Deher's Turn, as well as to stakes producers Point Gained and Perfect Story. It is the family of multiple graded stakes winner Dignitas and Group 1-placed winners Grass Eiko O and My Funny Horse.

Point Given becomes the fifth stallion to join the Calumet roster for 2013. He will stand alongside Melbourne Cup winner and Australian champion Americain; Canadian champion and classic winner Eye of the Leopard; multiple graded stakes winner Aikenite; and stakes winner Lentenor, a full brother to Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.
