ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Impossible Time, one of the leading older fillies and mares at Woodbine, should be formidable at a short price Wednesday night in the $125,000 Classy ‘n Smart Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile route on Polytrack.
Impossible Time, a 5-year-old trained by Roger Attfield, has won 7 of 13 career starts, which includes a 4-for-7 record this year. Her only loss at the meet came when she rallied for second behind front-runner Moonlit Beauty in the seven-furlong Zadracarta Stakes on the grass.
Impossible Time has stuck to the turf since the June 19 Zadracarta. She has since won two 1 1/16-mile events, an optional claimer and the Victoriana Stakes, which like the Classy ‘n Smart, is for Ontario-sired females.
Impossible Time has had a freshening leading up to this event, and she breezed five-eighths Sept. 24 in a sizzling 58.40 seconds.
Krz Exec figures to be the second choice, in her second start following a nine-month layoff. She ran second behind the talented 3-year-old Sugar Again when she came off the bench in a seven-furlong optional claimer on the grass, much to the delight of trainer Mike DePaulo.
“I thought she’d be short for that race, but she didn’t run like a short horse,” DePaulo said.
Krz Exec won three stakes during her formative years, including a pair of two-turn events late in her 2-year-old campaign in 2007.
Interregnum has run through her Ontario-sired allowance conditions this year, while banking $112,549, and is making her stakes debut under Chantal Sutherland.
Trainer John LeBlanc Jr. gets on Interregnum himself every day, and was pleased with her five-furlong breeze in 1:01 last Wednesday.
“I broke off behind two other horses,” LeBlanc recalled. “She began to close on them, and went on by in the stretch willingly, without any urging.”
Trainer Earl Barnett entered You Will Love Me and San Nicola Whiskey.
You Will Love Me captured last year’s Classy ‘n Smart with a modest 77 Beyer Figure, and finished a close second in the race in 2008. She is winless in three starts this year, and is coming off a non-threatening fifth in the Algoma Stakes.
San Nicola Whiskey has also struggled this year, but she is exiting an improved third-place behind Sugar Again and Krz Exec on Sept. 5.
