Hedge Fund, the only full sibling to 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, has retired to WinStar Farm, the Lexington stud farm has announced.
A 7-year-old Maria’s Mon-Supercharger gelding, last ran on July 10 for Purple Haze Stables at Mountaineer Park, where he won an $8,800 claiming race by 12 lengths. That closed out Hedge Fund’s career with 5 wins and 23 placings from 57 lifetime starts and $160,699 in earnings. Chris J. Englehart was the gelding’s last trainer.
Hedge Fund was bred by Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps, who later sold Supercharger, an A. P. Indy mare, to WinStar. WinStar mated the mare to Pin Oak stallion Maria’s Mon in 2006, getting Super Saver in 2007. But the stallion died the year Super Saver was foaled.
“We made arrangements to have Hedge Fund come to WinStar Farm and retire him from active racing,” WinStar co-owner Bill Casner said, adding, “At WinStar, we fell we have a sincere responsibility to take care of our own, and even though WinStar never had an ownership interest in Hedge Fund, we just thought it would be a crowning star for him to retire to the farm of his full brother.”
WinStar’s director of racing, Elliott Walden, said the bay gelding will “get all the benefits of living at WinStar. He will not be coming back out of retirement, a la Brett Favre.”
