LEXINGTON, Ky. – Careless Jewel, an 11-length winner of the Alabama Stakes last year, has retired from racing and will be offered in the Fasig-Tipton fall mixed sale Nov. 7.
The select sale takes place at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky. Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency will consign the filly.
Careless Jewel, by Tapit, won five races in 2009, all by significant margins. Starting in May, she won a maiden and an allowance race by a combined 10 3/4 lengths, then stepped into stakes company with a 7 1/4-length score in the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks. After the Alabama romp, she followed with a 3 1/2-length win in Philadelphia Park’s Grade 2 Fitz Dixon Cotillion Stakes. In her last start, the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, Careless Jewel finished eighth behind winner Life Is Sweet.
Careless Jewel had been pointing to her 4-year-old debut this year in the Shuvee Stakes but missed that race after trainer Josie Carroll found heat in a leg after a work.
Careless Jewel leaves the track with 5 wins and 1 third from 7 lifetime starts. She earned $1,013,346.
Gainesway Thoroughbreds and Bill Andrade bred Careless Jewel from the unraced Hennessy mare Sweet and Careless. Donna and Vern Dubinsky’s Donver Stable bought her for $40,000 at Keeneland’s 2007 September yearling auction.
