Canada’s 2010 Horse of the Year and two-time champion Biofuel has produced her first foal, a colt by Tapit, at Airdrie Stud in Midway, Ky., owner Brereton Jones said.
The 6-year-old Stormin Fever mare produced the Tapit colt early Wednesday morning.
“He’s a knockout, big and strong,” said Jones, who also bred and raced Biofuel. “And she’s a great mother.”
Jones said he would breed Biofuel back to Proud Citizen, who stands at Airdrie this year for a $15,000 stud fee. Now 14, the Gone West horse is the sire of Kentucky Oaks winners Believe You Can and Proud Spell, both of whom were bred and raced by Jones.
Biofuel was Canada’s champion juvenile filly in 2009 and was champion 3-year-old filly and Horse of the Year in 2010. She won five Woodbine stakes, including the Grade 3 Selene and Mazarine Stakes in 2010 and 2009, respectively. She also was second in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks and third in the Mother Goose Stakes in 2010. She retired in 2011 with six wins from 13 starts and $781,091 in earnings.
She is out of the unraced mare Ms. Cornstalk, by the late Airdrie sire Indian Charlie, who died in 2011.
