ETOBICOKE, Ontario − Biofuel, last year's co-champion 2-year-old filly in Canada, will be a short price when she takes on seven other 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Woodbine in the Grade 3, $250,000 Selene Stakes.
Biofuel had also been under consideration for this Saturday’s Grade 2 Fitz Dixon Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania, a race which is expected to attract the leader of the 3-year-old filly division in North America, Blind Luck. But trainer Reade Baker elected to remain at home for Sunday's race.
Biofuel is unbeaten in three Woodbine stakes this year, including a victory over older opposition in the Aug. 22 Belle Mahone. She also finished second in the Grade 1 CCA Oaks at Saratoga and third in the Grade 1 Mother Goose at Belmont.
Baker also entered Bubble Gum, who is coming off a narrow loss against older opposition going long in a second-level allowance.
“Her last race was much improved,” Baker said. “She’s first-time Lasix. She bled a little in her last start.”
Barracks Road could lead the way under Corey Fraser. She has stuck to the grass this year while notching two one-mile stakes, the Ontario Colleen and Ontario Damsel.
Barracks Road was winless in three Polytrack excursions as a 2-year-old, but Fraser said he is convinced she won’t mind the surface Sunday.
“I have confidence with her going back on the Polytrack,” Fraser said. “She works like a bear on the Polytrack. You ask anybody who watches her work − she’s amazing. I’m thinking last year, maybe she just wanted to be a 3-year-old. She’s a better horse this year, and I think either surface suits her.”
Tizahit ships in from Saratoga after finishing fifth in the Grade 1 Alabama. She captured the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes last fall at Aqueduct.
Kitty in a Tizzy, another Saratoga invader, ran second to Sharp Secretary in her last outing here Aug. 7 in the seven-furlong Duchess Stakes.
Distorted Legacy exits back-to-back runner-up placings against allowance opponents, most recently in a nine-furlong optional claimer on the grass.
