For All Who Conga ran poorly six days ago at Presque Isle Downs but trainer Jamie Ness expects improvement when he sends out the 4-year-old in a fourth-level allowance at a mile and 70 yards Tuesday evening.
Last Wednesday, For All Who Conga finished fifth of six in a six-furlong allowance race.
“He just kind of ran around the track, we train him for a route.” Ness said.
Ness ran For All Who Conga in the $138,000 Claiming Crown Jewel at Canterbury Park in his previous race on July 24. For All Who Conga was just off the pace early in the 1 1/8-mile event and finished fourth, beaten a length and a half, after drifting out in deep stretch.
“He just got plain outrun,” Ness said. “He had never been that far on the dirt, he just got tired.”
Ness was nonetheless pleased with how For All Who Conga ran in the Claiming Crown.
“I was very happy with his performance,” he said. “He gave a great effort.”
Ness had a reason for running For All Who Conga in last Wednesday’s six-furlong race.
“With the shipping and all that goes into the Claiming Crown, we had been taking it easy on him,” he said. “We wanted to use that race Wednesday as a prep to run long again and I think this is the prefect spot for him”.
For All Who Conga, a son of Congaree, proved he likes Presque Isle’s Tapeta surface by winning a conditioned allowance event at a mile and a sixteenth May 22, only to be disqualified later. “I had entered at Indiana Downs and scratched, so they put him on the vet’s list,” Ness said. “He was a day from being eligible, so he was disqualified.”
When entering a horse back one to seven days after a race, Ness wins at a 54-percent clip.
A field of eight is scheduled to go to the post Tuesday, although Granby Boy is cross-entered at Finger Lakes that afternoon.
