Toro Bravo, a good-looking gray son of Holy Bull, won his debut in the first race, a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds bred in Louisiana. He dueled three wide then pulled away by more than six lengths in what might have set him up for a start in the trials for the $100,000-added colts and geldings division of the D.S. "Shine" Young Memorial Futurity at Evangeline Downs. The finale is July 3.
Toro Bravo is a half-brother to Reckon, who back in 2008 was the runner-up in the fillies division of the "Shine" Young. He races for Coteau Grove Farms, is trained by Glenn Delahoussaye and was ridden by Kerwin Clark. Toro Bravo paid $6.60.
The upcoming third race is a maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies bred in Louisiana. The current 2-1 favorite is Do Dat Blues, a daughter of Lydgate trained by Michelle Lovell. The filly shows a handful of sharp gate works, with some of them coming earlier in the year at Diamond D Ranch, where Rachel Alexandra received her early training as a 2-year-old. Do Dat Blues is out of a Rubiano mare and will be ridden by Richard Eramia.
