Mythical Power and Euroears put on a show to the wire when they finished one-two in the Grade 3, $200,000 Texas Mile. The pair raced together early and finished a neck apart late, with Mythical Power edging past Euroears in what was the latter's two-turn debut. With the win, Mythical Power became the first horse to capture both the Grade 3 Lone Star Derby, accomplished last year, and the Texas Mile, which is the first of two major dirt stakes for older horses each spring at Lone Star.
The Texas Mile was one of three stakes on the card. Deal Breaker took the $50,000 Grand Prairie Turf Challenge and Bubbler, a multiple stakes winner on dirt, won her first turf stakes in the $50,000 Irving Distaff. All three races were preps for the richest stakes on the Lone Star Million Day card here May 31.
Lone Star drew an ontrack crowd of 18,232, while handle on the 11-race card from all sources was $1,956,238.
The attendance was the third highest for a Texas Mile card, behind 24,717 patrons in 1997, and 21,124 in 1999. Last year, Texas Mile attendance was 16,389.
