The first major card of the Lone Star meet will be run on Saturday afternoon, with the Grade 3, $200,000 Texas Mile anchoring a program that includes two other stakes and four allowances. The Texas Mile and the $50,000 Irving Distaff are highly competitive races, while the allowances themselves drew a host of stakes winners. Miss Missile, for example, will make her first start since last fall in an allowance sprint, while Shotgun Gulch is set to run in an overnight race for the first time since a debut win last year.
But the main event is the Texas Mile. And the field is stacked deep with talent. Jonesboro is seeking to defend his title in the race. Euroears, a multiple stakes-winning sprinter, will be making his two-turn debut. Mythical Power is back on natural dirt, where last year he won the Grade 3 Lone Star Derby, and Harlan Street is seeking his seventh straight win. Then there's Louisiana-bred sensation Star Guitar, who in his last start took on a highly-ranked horse in Battle Plan in the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap.
It's a real occasion to sharpen those pencils, handicappers!
