Travel Squad made his first start on turf and pulled an 18-1 upset in Saturday's fifth race.
Trained by Richard Mandella for B. Wayne Hughes, Travel Squad ($38.20) held off a late run from an unlucky Battle School (5-1) to win by a half-length, finishing a mile on turf in 1:35.87. Battle School weaved through traffic in the stretch to reach contention and was finishing very well.
Utopian, who was sent off as the 4-1 second choice after being listed at 12-1 on the morning-line, finished ninth in the field of 12. He broke slowly, but did close some ground in the stretch.
Travel Squad was making the second start of his career, having finished fifth in a seven-furlong maiden race on the main track at Santa Anita on April 4. He was ridden by Martin Garcia.
The fifth race was the first leg of a pick six, which attracted a pool of $229,770
