Jockey Mike Smith deserves credit for his ride aboard Gallant Son in Sunday's eighth race.
Smith kept Gallant Son behind a quick pace of 22.64 and 45.42 seconds, rallied wide on the turn and pulled away in early stretch to win by 1 3-4 lengths. "I was going to cut a corner," Smith said. "I didn't want to get in a pickle. I kept him in the clear and he did the rest."
Gallant Son won for the first time since the 2009 Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita. He has excelled on turf, having also finished second in the Grade 3 Sir Beaufort Stakes over a mile on turf at Santa Anita last December.
