J P's Gusto won the first race of his career in his second start in Monday's Willard Proctor Memorial Stakes, rolling through the stretch to win by 4 1-2 lengths over 1-5 favorite Belleofthebridle.
Interestingly, Belleofthebridle, the only filly in the field, finished 9 1-4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Edgewick Road.
Trainer David Hofmans considers J P's Gusto to be a long-term candidate for races such as the Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 8, the summertime championship for the division in Southern California.
