Trainer Jeff Mullins, who returned to training earlier this week after serving a 20-day suspension in late May and early June for a medication violation, saddled the first winner on Saturday's nine-race card with the heavily favored Big Wig ($4).
Big Wig rallied from off the pace to win the $25,000 claimer over 1 1-16 miles on turf by 2 3-4 lengths over Concerto's Thunder. Ridden by Tyler Baze, Big Wig was timed in 1:40.78.
The race was full of oddities. Victorian Prince, who eventually finished third, broke through the gate before the start, unseating jockey Felipe Valdez. Nathaniel, led by as many 10 lengths on the baackstretch before fading to finish last in the field of six.
