Hollywood Park: Midday report card

A sorry group of 2-year-olds needed 53.35 seconds to complete four and a half furlongs in race 1. Odds-on favorite Spark City popped the gate, lugged out badly into the turn, regained the lead in the stretch, and was all-out to win at $3.80. She is not much filly, nor are the colts that chased her in the $40,000 maiden-claimer. It was the slowest four and a half of the meet.

The old class horse High Standards wore down 3-5 favorite All Man to win by a neck in race 2, a $25,000 claiming race at six and a half furlongs. The final time was solid (1:15.71), and you cannot fault All Man. He ran his race, but got beat by a better horse. High Standards ($8.20) has lost his speed, but not his desire. The 8-year-old Marty Jones trainee is 8-for-29.

Wine on the Porch was pounded from 7-2 to 8-5 in race 3, a $9-10,000 claiming sprint. The betting action was telling; the front-runner wired the field in 1:16.46. The final time suggests trainer Mike Mitchell will keep him at the same level. Leading jockey Tyler Baze rode the winner.

El Nadia was odds-on to win race 4, a first-level filly-mare allowance at a mile and a sixteenth on turf. It turns out she is not much filly. She put in a half-hearted late run but was no match for perfect tripper Oui Say Oui ($8.40). The winner sat alone in second behind a kamikaze pacesetter, inherited the lead at the head of the lane, and was never threatened.
