Trainer A.C. Avila had a realistic outlook on Made for Magic's win in Sunday's Grade 2 Milady Handicap. "This is not the toughest division," Avila said.
He meant it's not the toughest division when Zenyatta stays in the barn.
Made for Magic, a $16,000 claim last summer, earned her first graded stakes win in the Milady. She had been sixth behind Zenyatta in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Handicap at Santa Anita in March.
In her last two starts, Made for Magic had mixed results. She scored an impressive win in an optional claimer over a mile at Santa Anita on April 2, winning by 8 3-4 lengths when eligible to be claimed for $62,500. She returned to finish third of five in the restricted Santa Lucia Handicap there on April 16. Avila said after the Milady that Made for Magic probably bounced in the Santa Lucia, and is likely to be given a decent rest before her next start.
