Golden Itiz won his stakes debut in the Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap on Saturday in a style that suggests he could play a role in the 3-year-old division in coming months.
Ridden by Tyler Baze, Golden Itiz ($3.80) stalked a quick pace and caught a well-meant Skipshot to win the Affirmed by a half-length, finishing 1 1-16 miles in 1:42.80.
Three months ago, Golden Itiz was a maiden, and his progress has been rapid. Trainer Ron Ellis and owners Mace and Samantha Siegel are planning a start in the $200,000 Swaps Stakes on July 17, which could be a prep for the Travers Stakes at Saratoga in August.
