Bogie, second as the 7-5 favorite in Sunday's Will Rogers Stakes, was a bit unlucky to lose the Grade 3 race for 3-year-olds on turf.
Ridden by Alex Solis, who flew in from Kentucky for the one mount, Bogie was last in a field of eight on the backstretch of the race over 1 1-16 miles. Bogie was forced to wait off heels behind a rival on the turn, and was quite wide entering the stretch. He seemed to find his best stride in the final furlong, making up five lengths but finishing a half-length behind Leroy's Dynameaux ($29.20).
Bogie's loss means he is still eligible for the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar on July 21, which is run over a mile on turf for 3-year-olds. It is possible that race may be too short for his late kick, especially since Del Mar has a short stretch. Longer races, such as 1 1-8 miles or farther, may be Bogie's best distances.
After Sunday's race, Solis said, "I just needed a little longer. I thought we had a good chance down the stretch, but that other horse was game. On the turn, I was waiting behind a bunch of horses. I wish I could have moved a little early, but if I did that, I would have had to go seven-wide at the three and a half and I didn't want to do that.
"I waited a little longer and he did his thing. He's such a big horse it takes him a little bit to get going."
