A couple of names to file into the ol' handicapper's notebook....Miss Luann and Midway Holiday...who impressed with half-mile drills on a firm Churchill Downs turf course Thursday morning.
Miss Luann, trained by Dale Romans, breezed a half mile around the dogs in 50.60 seconds, and Midway Holiday, from the Greg Foley barn, went the same distance in 50.80 seconds. Both fillies finished well in 23 seconds and change, and Miss Luann, in particular, galloped out powerfully around the turn following her drill.
For Miss Luann it was her first experience on the grass. A 4-year-old Unbridled's Song filly, she won a pair of races on Turfway's Polytrack this winter and was most recently a close fifth in the Wintergreen Stakes there Mar. 6. Look for her in a second-level allowance on the grass, perhaps as early as Wednesday.
Midway Holiday, a two-time winner on the grass at Fair Grounds over the winter, comes off a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Bourbonette at Turfway on the Polytrack, and seems a logical candidate for the Edgewood, an overnight stake for 3-year-old fillies on the grass on the Thursday of Derby week.
