Leading rider Calvin Borel, off his first mount in the second race Sunday due to a flight delay from Baltimore, was back for the third race, and rode Demarcation to victory.
Mere strides from the gate, it was apparent to all watched that Borel was in the irons. He immediately angled Demarcation into a rail-hugging position, where he tracked a slow pace in third for the early portion of the race.
With little room in front of the horse, and with Demarcation showing hesitancy behind the two leaders, Borel sent him three wide midway on the turn, and the 6-year-old gelding responded, surging to the lead and holding off a late rally from slow-starting Prom Shoes.
The winner, owned by Amerman Racing Stables, covered a mile on a sloppy track in 1:36.49, and paid $5.80.
Future plans for Demarcation are undecided, winning trainer Paul McGee said.
McGee has plenty of options with him. Demarcation is a graded stakes winner on the Churchill Downs dirt track, and also a graded winner locally on turf.
