Anybody who played Kali's Hero at 14-1 had a hard luck story to tell their friends and anyone else who'd listen after today's fifth race. Kali's Hero, a first time starter for trainer Terry Oliver, quickly sprinted well clear and appeared to be cruising to an easy victory when jockey Cecilio Penalba hit her right handed near the sixteenth pole. Kali's Hero ducked in suddenly from the stick, banged hard off the inner rail at which point Penalba lost his irons. To his credit, Penalba not only stayed on but continued to ride his horse to the wire but the pair had lost just enough momentum from the incident they could not contain the late rally by Destiny Joy and had to settle for second money in the bottom level maiden claiming dash for 2-year-old fillies. Meanwhile Schell Shocker, the 3-5 favorite for trainer Wesley Ward off just a couple of mediocre works, broke several lengths tardy, made a run wide around the turn but had nothing left at the head of the stretch and was off the board.
