Today's card certainly a giant letdown following Saturday's huge and successful Summit of Speed program.
The main track is fast and the turf firm with the rail out 15 feet. Here are some of the early highlights.
Carolina Fuego comes from dead last, runs down favorite Tiger At Nite in late stretch to take the opener. After watching speed quit late through the latter portion of Saturday's fare, one must begin to suspect a similar trend could be in the offing this afternoon.
Another late running winner as Waikiki runs down the speed, wins going away to graduate in the second race despite failing to change leads through the stretch. Freds Best Pal pounded to under 2-1 for his debut, races forwardly, fails to handle the turn, disappears late.
Guns Drawn takes huge class drop, overcomes what may be the biased track to win the third at even money. Just too good for this bunch. Twisted Wit, exiting a huge work with blinkers on, overcomes wide trip to outfinish oldy but goody Champagne Account for second.
They went a mile and three eighths and still couldn't separate Almuraad and Andalusian on the wire, the pair finishing in a dead heat. Despite bumping all over the place, incredibly no inquiry sign from the stewards although a claim of foul by rider of Baystreet Bully, the third place finisher, against Almuraad is disallowed following a long delay. Stewards didn't take much of a look at all at the stretch incident between Baystreet B. and the odds on Mecke Me Free who appeared ready to overtake that rival for third money when the pair collide and Mecke stumbled badly, losing his momentum and the show dough in the process.
