Belmont by way of Arlington: Life at Ten flattens foes, but flattered by track?
Belmnont folks? You out there?
I'd like a little perspective on Life at Ten's win in the G1 Phipps. Picked up the card with race 2, and saw front-running maiden Stormandaprayer set torrid splits and draw off, then looked at her PPs, wasn't all that impressed, and wondered if the track was favoring speed. Missed race 3, but chart shows front-runner in a $10K N3L claimer going bast six furlongs in 1:09.95 on way to 1:36.66 final time for one mile. No wonder Life at Ten was sent up to lead early over Unrivaled Belle, who looked equally fast. And watching Life at Ten go past three-quarters in 1:08.40, put Unrivaled Belle away, and then cruise to the wire, my thought was 'Wow - double wow.' But now, looking back over the charts and the splits, its obvious the times weren't as fast as I thought, and that LAT was aided by the track profile. Still, I gotta give the mare some credit. Her physical presence really impressed me when she was out here in ChiTown winning the 60 Sails. My gut feeling would be yes, the track enhanced what an improving horse (a little Fleet Indian-esque, right?) was already coming up to on her own.
