Emulating his sire, Victory Gallop, who rallied from next-to-last to nail Real Quiet in the final stride of the 1998 Belmont Stakes, Hoppsey (5th, $18.20) looped the field from dead last and ran down Cherokee Speed in a first-level turf allowance.
A late-blooming 5-year-old gelding from the barn of Steve Asmussen, Hoppsey was winning his third straight race, and has now won five of six this year, beginning with a maiden $12.5k victory back in January.
Cherokee Speed ran second for the third straight time; he has been the runner-up in four of five starts vs. similar company, beginning with a nose loss in that famous six-way photo on Alabama Day '09.
