Just when you think it can't get any worse ....
Several minutes before the running of the ninth race, Lorraine in Spain dumped jockey Ramon Dominguez and ran off about three-eighths of a mile before being corraled by the outrider. It certainly seemed like the horse was going to be announced as a late scratch.
But lo and behold, the outrider held the horse until the ambulance brought Dominguez over to her and was given a leg up. According to the stewards, Dr. Anthony Verderosa, the chief examining veterinarian, looked over Lorraine in Spain and deemed her okay to run.
After breaking slowly, Lorraine in Spain moved up betwen horses and was four wide in between horses turning for home. When the real running started in upper stretch and Dominguez began to ask his horse to run, predictably she offered little and finished fifth.
Plain and simple, those who wagered on Lorraine in Spain got screwed.
