It's a schadenfreude thing, I guess, but I really enjoy watching overbet favorites go down in flames. And make no mistake: Transplanted East Coaster Bullstar was hideously, horrifyingly overbet at odds of 2-5 in race 7. A 5-year-old 12-race maiden who had lost several times to Ny-breds? Who regularly coughed up stretch-call leads at short odds? I get that he was in for $25K and going first time for high-percentage Nick Canani barn. But -- just as he has done so many times before - Bullstar hit the front at about the eighth pole, and proceeded to salt away defeat, fading just enough to lose second to closing David D. Winner Bauers Got Hours actually ran quite well, disputing a quick early pace and staying on gamely. Another turf winner for trainer Dan Peitz.
And, speaking of heavily bet horses, No Passage is a somewhat shocking even-money with eight minutes to race 8. Trouble when fourth of 12 at 9-1 on June 5 when he made his synthetic debut in a race at this Illinois MSW class. But even-money? Firster Pick It Up Paul well played at 4-1, but I've sided with 15-1 debuter, Blue Canoe.
