Claim-and-drop is something I typically avoid, but not in the case of some barns. That of owner Frank Calabrese is foremost among those. Embers Glowing claimed for $25K out of most recent start at Gulfstream, entered in a $16K turf claimer today -- and absolutely crushed race 7 at odds of 3-5. Coming so fast into the stretch that she almost ran up on heels before Junior Alvarado got her outside and into the clear. Pace had held well in the day's first two grass races (front-running Cherokee Lord just nodded at the line in race 5 by heavily favored closer Our Champion), but this grass race was all closers.
Little of Poly quality so far today. Gentle Lana did light the board at 18-1 (Michael Baze for Tom Dorris) in race 6, a $10K claimer, and speed has not held well especially well throughout the main-track portion of the program.
