A handicap division lacking depth may have welcomed a new member to the fold in Tizway.
In his first start since running 12th in the Japan Cup Dirt on Dec. 6, Tizway scored a visually-impressive victory in Friday's third-level allowance feature. Receving a stalking trip from Rajiv Maragh, Tizway took over from pace-setting Roaring Lion at about the sixteenth pole and scored under a vigorous hand ride. His final time of 1:22.44 for seven furlongs was solid.
Tizway, a 5-year-old son of Tiznow, did run third to Summer Bird in last year's Jockey Club Gold Cup and was fourth in the Grade 1 Whitney. It'll be interesting to see what owner William Clifton and trainer James Bond do with htis horse next. Met Mile against Quality Road? Stephen Foster at Churchill?
Anyway, nice to have another good horse to follow.
Victory was third on the day for Maragh, who won fourth on Freshman Dorm, splitting horses in the stretch to nose out Financially Secure, who nosed out Mystic Fever. Maragh also won sixth aboard Our Special Effort.
Cornelio Velasquez rode two winners on card including Centrina ($6.60) in the opener and True That ($4.50) in the fourth.
