Biloxi, bet down to 1-2, based on sharp second in debut at Gulfstream on Florida Derby Day, outlasted well-meant firster Daimon's Tale to break maiden in second start. Stewards posted a delayed inquiry sign and while the two bumped nearing the wire, it was Daimon's Tale who initiated the contact under John Velazquez.
Daimons Tale broke slowly and rushed up to duel the favorite through splits of 21.86 seconds and 44.67. The two grew leg weary in the stretch, which made for some erratic running, but Biloxi ran six furlongs in 1:10.32.
Cornelio Velasquez rode Biloxi, a son of Tiznow, for Rick Dutrow Jr, giving Velasquez a sweep of the double. Active Trader made a late run for third, but may not have been as good as it looked given the fractions and weariness of the frontrunners.
